Warriors Softball Split Again

CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College softball team wrapped up the Warrior Spring Fling with another split on Sunday. The host Warriors (4-2) defeated Austin College (1-2) 8-6 in the opener, then fell to Washington University (8-0) 7-0.

Against the Kangaroos, the Warriors held off a seventh inning , two-out rally. Sophomore pitcher Lauren Whitby limited Austin to three runs through the first six innings. The ‘Roos rallied against freshman reliever Kayla Patton, getting four hits, including a three-run home run over the center field fence by Briana Hernandez, cutting the Warrior lead to two. Whitby (1-0) came back in to get the final out and the win.

Austin pitcher Amber Pemberton (0-4) suffered the loss.

Hendrix freshman first baseman Shelby Anderson went 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Sophomore Katy Havens had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs. Senior center fielder Sydney Copeland had a single and a triple and junior left fielder Tiffany Hubbard also picked up a pair of hits. Sophomore shortstop Michaela Larabee had a hit, two runs scored, a RBI and two stolen bases.

In the nightcap, Bear starter Brooke Hofer (2-0) limited the Warriors to four hits, while fanning one in four innings. Annie Pitkin earned the save by striking out three and giving up just three hits and a walk in three innings. Hendrix senior Ashley Halbert (2-2) gave up 10 hits, five earned runs, a walk and struck out seven.

Washington picked up three runs in the first, two in the second and two in the sixth. Shortstop Adrienne White had two hits with three RBI. Sydney Caldwell and Hillary Stepansky each had two hits and two runs scored and Stacy Berg drove in three.

Larabee had two hits to lead the Warriors.

Hendrix will open Southern Athletic Association play at Centre College in Danville, Ky. on Saturday.
