Warriors Sweep Royals to Start 2013

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – The Hendrix College softball team kicked the 2013 campaign off with an explosive start, topping Ecclesia College 12-0 in five innings and 9-0 in six innings on the road Sunday.

In the opener, senior pitcher Ashley Halbert threw a three-hit, five-strikeout shutout, the ninth of her career. She also went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple, walked twice and scored three times.

Freshman first baseman Shelby Anderson went 3-for-4, including an inside-the-park homerun and a double, and drove in four. Senior third baseman Paula Burr hit a two-run triple and scored twice. Sophomores Morgan Fires and Katey Havens and junior Catelyn Gibbs each had an RBI as well. As a team, the Warriors registered 11 hits.

In the second game, Hendrix put up four runs in the first, one in the fifth and four in the sixth. They had eight hits and took advantage of five errors by the Royals.

Fires had two hits and two batted in and senior center fielder Sydney Copeland hit a two-run triple. Halbert drove in two more and Anderson knocked in one. Sophomore shortstop Michaela Larabee had a hit, scored twice and stole a base.

Freshman pitcher Kayla Patton picked up the win, striking out four and allowing four hits in five innings. Sophomore Lauren Whitby pitched a perfect bottom of the sixth for the Warriors.

Hendrix will play their first games at home on Saturday and Sunday when they host Austin College and Washington University for the Warrior Spring Fling.
