What are Heel Spurs?

Heel spurs are a very common problem among patients with plantar fasciitis, a common foot problem found most often in people whose occupations require much time standing on their feet and athletes. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the band of tissue, called the plantar fascia, which runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel to the toes, becomes inflamed due to overuse.

A heel spur, which is visible with the use of an X-ray, is a bony protrusion on the bottom of the foot where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone. They occur most often in patients who have lived with plantar fasciitis for an extended period of time. Approximately 70 percent of plantar fasciitis patients will develop heel spurs, though a large number of those with heel spurs show no signs of the condition
