FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas women’s tennis coach Michael Hegarty announced the signing of three players for the 2013 spring season. Flavia Araujo, Segou Jonker, and Brittany Huxley will join the Razorbacks as freshmen.

Flavia Araujo comes to Arkansas from Sao Paulo, Brazil. She was rated among the best junior players in all of South America, and has already attained a world ranking with the WTA.

“Flavia is a fantastic addition to the Razorback women’s tennis program,” Hegarty said. “She has been a very accomplished player prior to her arrival, so her adjustment to college tennis should be quick. Flavia is going to be a great spark for this program and we are thrilled to welcome her.”

Brittany Huxley enters UA from Grafton, Australia. Huxley achieved a top 100 women’s national ranking at the age of 15 and also represented Australia in international competition.

“I’m very excited about Brittany’s arrival,” Hegarty said. “She is the first Australian that has enrolled with us here in Fayetteville since Tara Reid, who had a stellar career. Brittany has achieved great junior success. She is an impact freshman, and we will count on her immediately.”

Segou Jonker comes from Fayetteville from Krimpen, Netherlands. She was ranked as high as #1 in the junior rankings of Netherlands before coming to Arkansas for her collegiate career.

“Segou is a marvelous addition to our program,” Hegarty said. “She enters college tennis after a very successful junior career in the Netherlands. She has had numerous impact victories in her European junior career and both her singles and doubles play will be counted on heavily even as a freshman.”

Arkansas will be a very young squad this season. With the three new additions, the Razorbacks will feature seven freshmen, one sophomore, and one senior.

The Razorbacks begin the spring season on January 19, when they travel to Houston to face Prairie View A&M and UT – Pan American.
