Emmanuel, Mobile Hand Lyon Softball Twin Setbacks

MOBILE, Ala. – Lyon College’s Jessica Cagigas had a 4-for-6 afternoon in two games Wednesday, but the Lyon College softball team couldn’t put enough offense together to get back on the winning track, falling to Emmanuel College, 6-2, and University of Mobile, 8-0, at the UM Softball Field.

The twin setbacks leave the Scots at 1-13 for the season. Lyon will take Thursday off, before opening play on Friday in the 30-team Gulf Shores Invitational, which runs Friday through Sunday in southern Alabama. The Scots hope to snap their 10-game losing skid when they take on Brenau University (8 a.m.) and William Carey University (2 p.m.) on Friday, before battling Bethel University (10 a.m.) and Lee University (4 p.m.) on Saturday.

Emmanuel College 6, Lyon College 2

After battling to a 1-1 tie through three and one-half innings against Emmanuel College (Ga.), the Lions scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the fifth and sixth frames to pull away from the Scots, 6-2.

Cagigas went 2-for-3 to pace Lyon at the plate. She drove in a run and drew a walk. First baseman Lauren Taylor went 1-for-2 with a run scored, while rightfielder Stephanie Haft and second baseman Amanda McCauley each posted 1-for-3 efforts. Catcher Macy Coffee also plated for the Scots.

Linsey Hearn and Madison Franklin led the Emmanuel attack with 2-for-4 efforts, with one RBI apiece. Hearn scored a pair of runs and Franklin crossed the plate once.

Cagigas (1-6) started the game in the circle for the Scots and took the loss. She pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs (4 total) on six hits, with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Lauren Mills pitched the final frame, surrendering two runs on two hits with a strikeout.

Kaitlyn Lawrence went the distance for the Lions and was credited with the win. In seven innings she held the Scots to one earned run (2 total) on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Lyon posted three errors in the game, while Emmanuel tallied two.

University of Mobile 8, Lyon College 0 (5 inn.)

The University of Mobile scored three runs in the first and added four more in the third frame as the Rams captured an 8-0 win over Lyon College in five innings in the Scots second game of the afternoon.

Kate Tyree (0-5) was the losing pitcher for the Scots. She lasted 0.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with one walk. Cagigas came out of the bullpen for Lyon, surrendering five unearned runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk in four frames.

Ali Hall was the winning hurler for Mobile. She went the distance, throwing a four-hit shutout. She fanned five batters and walked just one.

Cagigas once again led the Lyon offensive attack, posting a 2-for-3 effort. Haft and shortstop Valerie Howell each went 1-for-3 at the dish, while third baseman Savannah Graham drew a walk.

Korie Fontenot paced the Rams, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run driven in.
