BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College softball team couldn’t overcome several miscues on defense Wednesday afternoon and Hannibal-LaGrange University took advantage of the mistakes to take a 6-0 American Midwest Conference win over the Scots in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Howard & Mary House Field.

Game 2 of the twinbill was another story. The Scots jumped out in front 3-0 in the top of the first frame, but heavy rains from a cold front ended play at that point. Lyon also had the bases loaded when play was stopped. The game will be completed, field conditions permitting, today (Thursday) at 11 a.m.

The Game 1 setback snapped a short two-game winning streak by the Scots, as they dropped to 8-29 on the year, 4-9 in AMC action. The Lady Trojans improved to 13-14 on the season and strengthened their hold on fourth place in the conference with an 8-5 league mark.

With five conference games remaining, Lyon is still in seventh place in the 10-team race, one-half game ahead of Benedictine University at Springfield (5-15, 3-9 AMC) in the chase for the final two AMC Postseason Tournament spots. The top eight teams advance to the conference tournament. Harris-Stowe University (5-20, 1-8 AMC) is on ‘the bubble’ in the ninth spot.

Hannibal-LaGrange took a 4-0 lead in the second inning and then added runs in the third and fifth to take the win. Lyon suffered through seven errors in the contest.

Kachina Hudson (9-7) picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Trojans. She went the distance, throwing a five-hit shutout. She also fanned five and did not allow a walk.

Lauren Mills (7-15) received the loss despite only giving up one earned run. She allowed eight hits.

Five different Scots picked up singles in the game. Second baseman Amanda McCauley, leftfielder Savannah Graham, rightfielder Stephanie Haft, first baseman Lauren Taylor and third baseman Whitney Keith all connected with singles.

Taylor Lewis paced the Lady Trojans with a 2-for-4 performance. She also drove in a run. Kelli Black added a single, while scoring once and pushing in a pair of runs.
