Pine Bluff, AR- Tonight marked the start of SWAC conference basketball play, as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions played host to the Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devilettes.

The UAPB  Lady Lions started tonight’s contest on a five to zero run on a Cassidy Wright three pointer and Chigozianyi Okwumbua lay-up. The lead would change hands five times before the intermission. The ball clubs would go into the half knotted up at 26 apiece.

The Lady Lions would start the second half off strong, but costly turnovers and too many missed opportunities at the basket would prove to be the difference down the stretch as the Delta Devilettes were able to hold off the Lady Lions to the tune of 71-64.

Despite not being able to come away with the victory, the Lady Lions would have four players in double figures for scoring. Okwumbua led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Wright added 12. Lakendra Marsh and Asia Rhines-Malone would chip in 10 respectively. Marion Thompson would also contribute eight points and seven rebounds.

Leading the way for the Delta Devilettes was Lenise Stallings, who led all scorers with 15 points. Devina Jefferson put in 12 points as the Delta Devilettes escaped H.O. Clemmons Arena with the first conference victory of the 2012-2013 basketball season.

Up next for the Lady Lions is a Sunday match-up, January 6th, against the Lady Hornets of Alabama State. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM. This is also Community Appreciation Day; all Lady Lions fans are asked to come out and show their support.
