A Report from the Road – Mississippi Recruits

While Arkansas Head Coach Bret Bielema went five-for-five in his mid-year, junior college recruit signing this week, reports from Mississippi show the Ole Miss Rebels signed three, JuCo players, while Mississippi State signed two.

The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss., reports there was a surprise for both of Mississippi’s Southeastern Conference schools this week, too: Defensive End Za’Darius Smith of East Mississippi Community College spurned Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Texas A&M, and signed with Kentucky. According to the paper, Smith never mentioned or visited Kentucky before he announced his decision.

It should be noted, however, Kentucky’s new head coach, Mark Stoops, did add East Mississippi C.C.’s defensive line coach, Jimmy Brumbaugh, to his staff recently.

The prize of the signing class for Hugh Freeze was Lavon Hooks, a 6-foot-4, 302-pound defensive tackle from Northeast Mississippi Community College. His signing is said to have brought Freeze to tears of joy.
