JONESBORO, Ark. (4/23/2013) — Ole Miss scored five runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat Arkansas State 11-1 Tuesday night before a season-high home crowd of 1,006 at Tomlinson Stadium.
The crowd of over 1,000 was just the second since 2002 and the first since March 28, 2008 when the Red Wolves (22-19) hosted Memphis before a record-crowd of 1,019.
The Rebels (30-12) scored two five runs off starting pitcher David Owen in the top of the first inning. Owen hit the first batter he faced in the inning and gave up runs on a sacrifice fly, a single, a bases loaded and a two-run double. The freshman battled back in the second and retired the side in order in the top of the second inning.
The Red Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when ASU put together back-to-back doubles to cut into the Ole Miss lead. Ryan Emery doubled to put himself into scoring position and Claude Johnson followed with a double to right field to give A-State its first run of the game 7-1.
Arkansas State failed to take advantage of any further scoring opportunities in the inning. Logan Uxa was hit by a pitch after Johnson’s double, but Ryan Roberts struck out and Johnson was thrown out trying to steal third to end the threat for the Red Wolves.
Seven A-State pitchers combined to give up 11 runs on 11 hits on the night. Brandon Milhouse replaced Owen in the third inning and gave up two runs on three hits in two innings of work, while Seth McWilliams gave up a in the seventh inning. Adam Grantham gave up three runs on three hits. Cody Woodhouse, Derek Birginske and Tanner Ring combined to pitch three innings of no-hit baseball in the middle and latter innings.
Arkansas State had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third inning when Alex Potts led off with an infield single. Dustin Jones reached on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error by Ole Miss third baseman Andrew Mistone. However, Collin Massanelli lined out to the first baseman and Jones was doubled off first after being too far away from the bag.
Dustin Jones, Alex Potts, Uxa, Johnson and Emery each recorded a hit on the night, with Johnson driving in ASU’s only run.
The Red Wolves will return to action April 26-28 for a three-game home series against Middle Tennessee. Friday and Saturday night’s games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., while Sunday’s series finale is set for 1 p.m.
