Arkansas Tech 49-Nazarene 7
BETHANY, Okla. – Senior Ketrich Harmon rushed for 132 yards and three scores on 18 carries, becoming the first Arkansas Tech player to rush for over 100 yards since Casey Henderson rushed for 141 yards on November 5, 2011 against Southwestern Oklahoma, while Jonathan Keener rushed for 62 yards and a score, and Deandre’ Bonner had two interceptions as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (2-1, 2-1 Great American Conference) rushed past the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm (0-3, 0-3 GAC), winning 49-7 on Saturday at the SNU Football Stadium.
The Wonder Boys rushed for 277 yards, the highest rushing yardage by Tech since a 282-yard performance on Oct. 31, 2009 against Delta State.
Meanwhile, Tech held SNU to just 218 yards of total offense, narrowly missing the season low of 214 yards allowed to Northwestern Oklahoma in the season opener.
Tech opened scoring on the opening drive of the game, using an 18-yard run by Harmon to take a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the contest. After forcing SNU into a three-and-out, Tech drove 63 yards over 11 plays, capped by a three-yard touchdown run by Justin Owens to push ahead 14-0.
SNU responded on the ensuing possession, driving 77 yards over seven plays, capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Terry to Jarod Martin to pull to within 14-7.
Those would be the last points of the game for the Crimson Storm.
For the Wonder Boys, it was just the beginning, as Harmon capitalized on the first drive of the second quarter, punching the ball into the end zone from the one-yard line to push the Tech lead to 21-7, a score that would hold into the second half.
In the third quarter, Keener took a direct snap 44 yards for the score to push the Tech lead to 28-7, and after Bonner’s interception and 48-yard return gave Tech the ball on the SNU six-yard line, Harmon found the end zone again with a six-yard touchdown run to give Tech a 35-7 lead.
Tech took advantage of another turnover by SNU, this time on a blocked punt, starting a drive on the SNU 11 and using a two-yard run by Owens to push ahead 42-7.
The Wonder Boys scored their final touchdown when Henderson took a draw 25 yards for the score with 8:43 to play.
Darion Shine led the Wonder Boys with six tackles, four solo, while Logan Genz and Wesley McKinney both had five solo stops. The Wonder Boys held SNU to just 27 yards rushing, while allowing the Crimson Storm to convert just four of 15 third-down opportunities.
The Tech offense converted six of 12 third downs, while averaging 5.6 yards per play.
The Wonder Boys will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, as the Wonder Boys travel to Thibodaux, La. to face Nicholls State. A 6 p.m. kick is scheduled.
