DUMAS – A basket by Edmond Hunter with four seconds lifted the Pirates of Drew Central to a 55-52 victory over the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars, despite losing a 13-lead during a 13-point in the second half.
Helena-West Helena’s defense held Drew Central to just four points through the first 11 minutes, but the Cougars missed several free throws and were 0-11 from 3-point range in the first half and could not break the game open. After leading 13-4 in the second quarter, the Cougars went cold and Drew Central took their first lead 17-16 with 1:36 2nd and stretched the lead to 23-18 at the intermission.
Drew Central continued their run and pushed the lead to 33-20 before Delane Bedford ended the drought for Helena-West Helena and stopped the 29-7 run for the Pirates. The Cougars then got their first 3-point basket from Keyshawn Simpson with 23 seconds to go in the third quarter to cut th elead to 37-29. Helena-West Helena then steadily cut into the lead and with 4:09 to go in the game, Jeremy Hampton cut the lead to one at 46-45. The teams went back and forth and with 14 seconds to go, Drew Central was called for a technical foul.
Delane Bedford hit 1-2 free throws to tie the game at 52-52. Then, Hunter’s basket put the Pirates ahead for good. Drew Central added one free throw for the final margin.
Helena-West Helena falls to 1-3 on the season.
