Hendrix College Warriors End First Season with Loss

CONWAY, Ark. – The first intercollegiate football season in 53 years at Hendrix College came to an end Saturday as the Warriors fell to Sewanee – The University of the South 35-9 at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.

Hendrix finishes the season with a 3-7 overall record and 1-5 mark in the Southern Athletic Association.

The Tigers (4-6, 3-3) limited the Warriors to a season-low 193 yards, while amassing 472 – 408 of which were on the ground. Hendrix also failed to continue a drive all day, going 0-for-11 on third down conversions and 0-for-5 on fourth down.

Sewanee’s rushing total led to the Tigers controlling the ball for 37:21, leaving the Warriors with the ball for 22:39.

Sewanee jumped out to a 22-0 lead with 1:43 left in the first half after a Barrett Goodson 11-yard run. Hendrix finally got on the board when freshman Ethan Hoppe blocked the ensuing extra point and freshman Thomas Weissert scooped up the ball and took it to the endzone for two points.

The blocked PAT was the second on the day for the Warriors, as redshirt freshman Caleb Shannonblocked another kick early in the second quarter.

Hendrix cut the lead to 22-9 after freshman tailback Dayton Winn capped a four-play, 36-yard drive with a one-yard scramble after a Sewanee fumble.

The Tigers added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the final score.

Warrior freshman quarterback was 23-of-40 passing for 120 yards and an interception. He also rushed 11 times for 41 yards. Winn ran 11 times for 32 yards and a score. Freshman receiver Spencer Smithhad five catches for 32 yards and redshirt freshman Jay Jeffers caught three pass for 49 yards. Freshman Travus McMahon had five catches for 23 yards.

Quarterback Curtis Johnson ran 30 times for 150 yards and a touchdown and was 2-for-4 for 29 yards passing. Cody Daniel recorded 12 carries for 112 yards and a score and was 4-of-7 with 35 yards through the air. Cortez Brown, Barrett Goodson and Andrew Keenan each had a rushing touchdown for the Tigers.

Defensively, Shannon and freshman linebacker Broc Smith led the Warriors with 14 tackles each. Freshman linebacker Ben Cunningham added 13 and freshman safety Jake Steward had 12 tackles, 1.5 for a loss, half a sack and two pass breakups. Freshman defensive end Gray Stanton came up up with 1.5 sacks.

John Paul McDonnell had seven tackles for Sewanee and Alex Kops had seven, with 2.5 for a loss. David Garcia recorded a 23-yard interception.
