Red Wolves Basketball Team To Face In-State Competition This Season

JONESBORO – The 2013-14 Arkansas State University men’s basketball team should be well prepared for Sun Belt Conference (SBC) action this upcoming season as the Red Wolves basketball team will play a competitive 12 non-conference game schedule, including games agains several in-state opponents, in an announcement made this week by A-State head coach John Brady.

Arkansas State’s non-conference opponents will feature some familiar foes such as the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar, and Southern Arkansas along with some nationally recognized schools like Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska.

The non-league slate involves six home games at the ASU Convocation Center, highlighted by appearances from the UCA Bears (Nov. 24), Niagara (Dec. 2), Toledo (Dec.17), and Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (Dec. 30).  Niagara received a bid to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in the 2012-13 campaign.

For the road contests, the Red Wolves will travel west in mid-November to face Wyoming on Nov. 16 and Colorado on Nov. 18.  Wyoming was a College Basketball Invitational (CBI) participant this past season while Colorado competed in the NCAA Tournament.  ASU is also scheduled to make visits to Nebraska (Dec. 14) and Marshall (Dec. 21).

The Red Wolves host exhibition home games against a pair of in-state schools in Henderson State Reddies (Nov. 2) and the University of Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils (Nov. 5) before officially opening the 2013-14 campaign the following week on Nov. 11 at Jackson (Miss.) State.

The Red Wolves basketball team has compiled a 129-108 (.544 winning percentage) all-time ledger against its 2013-14 non-conference opponents.  Meanwhile, those non-league foes combined to produce a 155-209 (.426) ledger this past 2012-13 season.

Starting times for all A-State’s 2013-14 regular-season contests will be announced at a later date.

“We are excited about our schedule for this upcoming season,” said Brady, who will begin his sixth season at A-State this 2013-14 campaign.  “ We have some challenging games early, particularly on the road and also home games against some teams which our fans may not have seen before but definitely good teams nevertheless.

“The Sun Belt Conference schedule will be challenging as well but at the end of the season it definitely lends our way with the number of home games we have.  We are looking forward to the season and really like our basketball team,” added Brady.

The Red Wolves will begin defense of their Sun Belt Conference West Division Championship title in early January 2014 with conference road outings against a pair of league newcomers in Texas-Arlington on Jan. 2 followed by Texas State Jan. 4.  The following week, A-State opens the home portion of its conference schedule with contests versus Troy on Jan. 9 and South Alabama Jan. 11.  Western Kentucky, the 2013 SBC Tournament Champion and NCAA Tournament participant, welcomes the Red Wolves on Jan. 18 before venturing to Jonesboro Feb. 10 in the second and final regular-season meeting between the two conference schools.

An annual highlight of Arkansas State’s schedule is the competitive home-and-home conference series with in-state rival UALR.  A-State will entertain the Trojans Jan. 15 at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro before visiting UALR on March 1 at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, Ark., in what represents their final conference regular-season road appearance.

The Red Wolves close out the 2013-14 regular season in early March at home with three Sun Belt Conference tilts in one week.  A-State begins its home stand versus Georgia State Mar. 4 followed by a visit from ULM on Mar. 6.  Coach Brady’s squad will square off against West Division foe Louisiana-Lafayette on Mar. 8 for A-State’s Senior Night in the regular-season finale.

Arkansas State produced one of its best seasons in the program’s history in 2012-13 with a 19-12 record overall and a first-place 12-8 SBC West Division mark.  The Red Wolves earned their second league divisional crown in the last three years.
