Boll Weevils Get the Win, Snap Losing Streak

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 42-34 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday at home.

The Boll Weevils (1-1, 1-1 Great American Conference) were the only team to score back-to-back touchdowns in the contest that featured a combined 10 touchdowns and three field goals. Each team answered the other’s scores on every occasion with the exception of UAM’s first two touchdowns of the second quarter. A 14-yard pass from freshman Brett Courville to junior Skylar Scott at the 11:11 mark followed by an unsuccessful extra point attempt left UAM down one point at 14-13.

After forcing Southeastern (1-1, 1-1 GAC) to punt on the ensuing possession, UAM went ahead for the first time on a four-yard touchdown run from junior Rod Smith at the 7:41 mark. A failed two-point conversion gave UAM a 19-14 lead.

Southeastern answered on a 24-yard touchdown pass from to Kaymon Farmer from Nick Sioson to put the Savage Storm back on top 21-19 with 4:32 remaining in the opening half. UAM took the lead at the break with a 33-yard field goal from freshman Jamie McGee with 39 seconds left.

Southeastern opened the second half scoring on a 29-yard Sioson pass to Anthony Gale at the 12:01 mark. UAM went to Skylar Scott again for its next score, a four-yard scoring strike from sophomore Colton Morrison to put UAM on top by one at 29-28 with 8:05 left in the third quarter.

The Savage Storm answered with a Chris Peoples 23-yard field goal to cap a 14-play, six-minute drive.

Scott hauled in his third touchdown catch of the evening to start the fourth quarter scoring with a 66-yard reception from Morrison on the first play of a drive following a Southeastern punt.

Peoples finalized the Southeastern scoring with a 37-yard field goal on theensuing possession to cap another 14-play drive. That field goal still left UAM with a one-point advantage at 35-34 with 9:21 remaining in regulation.

The Weevils added cushion with the final score of the game on a 30-yard catch and run from Morrison to senior Jamal Nixon to cap a five-play, 97-yard drive following a fumble recovery on a first and goal situation for the Savage Storm. Nixon was responsible for UAM’s first touchdown of the game with a 51-yard catch and run from Morrison following a Southeastern touchdown at the 9:42 mark of the opening quarter.

UAM came away with a plus-three turnover margin in the contest after forcing four turnovers – three interceptions and a fumble recovery. UAM forced a total of six fumbles in the game. Two of UAM’s interceptions were from junior Mike Early, one of which was returned 46 yards. Early finished the night with a total of eight tackles and recorded an additional pass breakup.

Junior Keith Reynolds led the UAM defensive attack for the second-straight game with 10 tackles, eight of which were unassisted. Junior Alex Black also recorded 10 tackles in the win, and was credited with UAM’s third interception off a deflected pass.

Skylar Scott finished the game with a team-high eight receptions for a career-high 165 yards with three touchdowns. Nixon finished with seven receptions for 151 yards with two scores.

Colton Morrison finished 25-of-36 through the air with 345 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions. Courville was 2-for-2 in relief for 27 yards and one touchdown.

The Boll Weevils remain in Monticello for its next contest, a 6 p.m. kickoff next Saturday, September 21 against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Rangers (0-2) were defeated on the road by Harding on Saturday by a final score of 69-0.
