At the start of Jerry Jones’ tenure as the Dallas Cowboys owner, the most impressive numbers associated with his franchise came on the field: One Jimmy Johnson, three Super Bowl titles and, through 1995, a playoff record of 11-2.

In recent years, success has been more than a little elusive. Since 1995, the Cowboys have won two playoff games.

But such mediocrity hasn’t stopped Jones from dazzling off the field. His imprimatur graces two of the most ostentatious man-made objects in the American sports culture: Cowboys Stadium, constructed as the world’s largest domed structure, and a $2 million bus called the “Elegant Lady” which essentially serves as Jones’ Cowboys Stadium luxury suite on wheels – and steroids.

The bus, which debuted during the Super Bowl, “more than lives up to its name,” writes Chuck Schilken of the LA Times:

“Everything is so shiny, from the floor to the fridge. Plenty of comfy places to relax — and lots of reminders that this luxury palace on wheels belongs to the Cowboys, including a giant blue star on the outside.

There are three rooms, including a fully functional kitchen, and a total of nine televisions, with three big-screen TVs in the “part where Mr. Jones likes to hang out,” according to longtime team bus driver Emory Tyler.”

Yes, Jerry’s (off the field) World just keeps getting bigger and better. As does Jerry’s Past.

The 70-year-old was born to a vegetable vendor on the fringe of the Arkansas Delta. As a child, he slept in a very modest home in what’s now North Little Rock, but spent most of his free time working at his father’s Rose City grocery store or playing baseball and football.

That childhood home is currently on the market for $138,900. It features a new stove, a chandelier-lit foyer, a jetted tub and mature pecan trees in the backyard. It is, as a recent Arkansas Democrat-Gazette ad pointed out, “Totally remodeled.”

Now if only the same could soon be said of  the Cowboys …

The author is convinced that in some form or fashion we all need an “Elegant Lady’ in our lives. He gets his Twitter on here
