Lyon College Women Outgun Ecclesia College, 86-56

BATESVILLE, Ark. – After building a 14-point halftime lead with 57 percent shooting from the field, the Lyon College women’s basketball team kept up constant defensive pressure, while hitting 51 percent in the final 20 minutes to pull away from Ecclesia College, 86-56, in a non-conference contest in James C. Becknell Gymnasium Monday night.

Lyon College (12-2), which recorded its third straight win and eighth in its last nine contests, will get back to American Midwest Conference action on Thursday night when the Scots (2-0 in AMC) battle Park University (4-7, 1-1 AMC) in Becknell Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. The game will be the first half of a women-men doubleheader with the LC men.

The loss was the Lady Royals ninth straight and 14th in their last 15 contests as EC dropped to 2-18 on the year.

Five Lyon College players scored in double figures as 13 different players saw playing time, with 11 scoring. Suzanne Fincham hit 5-of-8 field goals to score 12 points, while recording four rebounds, four blocked shots, four steals and a pair of assists. Batesville’s Alex Davidson also threw in 12 points, canning 5-of-6 from the field. She also added five assists, two steals and two boards. Debbie Onukwube chipped in 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, pulling down six rebounds, picking up two steals and adding a pair of assists.

Lyon’s Phagen Altom was also in double-figures, scoring 11 points, while adding six assists, four boards and a steal. Rachael Jones came off the bench to hit 3-of-5 from the field and score 10 points.

The Scots’ Whitney Keith scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, handed out five assists and picked up a steal. Other scorers for Lyon included Gabby Jenkins with seven points, Christine Smith scored six, Tiffany Angotti ended up with three and Cayley Wagoner and Brianna Tharp each had two points.

Tabitha Nelson paced the Lady Royals with 12 points and six rebounds, while Sibyl Thomas managed 11 points and four boards.

After Ecclesia College took a pair of two-point leads in the first minute, the Scots took their first lead 1:02 into the contest and never relinquished it. Lyon built an 11-4 advantage at the 16:39 mark with a 9-0 run, but the Lady Royals trimmed it back to one, 15-14, at the 11:46 mark of the half.

It took 1:13 for the Scots to go back up by seven (21-14), and an 8-0 run to close the first half put Lyon on top, 38-24. LC hit 57.1% (16-of-28) of its shots from the field in the first half and forced 14 EC turnovers. The Lady Royals connected on 33.3% (9-of-27) in the first period.

Lyon College continued to stretch the lead to begin the second half, inching out to a 55-28 lead with 15:43 left in the contest.

The Scots outscored the Lady Royals 17-7 over the next 7:59 to create their largest lead of 37 (72-35) with 7:44 remaining and they coasted from there.

Lyon committed only 14 turnovers in the game, hitting 33-of-61 (54.1%) field goals, while connecting on 36.8% (7-of-19) from behind the three-point arc. LC also converted 13-of-15 (86.7%) of its free throws.

Ecclesia made 22-of-60 (36.7%) of its field goals and only 18.2% (2-of-11) from three-point land.
