BATESVILLE, Ark. – Lyon College senior designated hitter Jim Gossett is hitting stride at the right time – the postseason.
Gossett’s batting average has been on the rise all season long. He pulled into a first-place tie on the Lyon squad after a weekend series with 15th-ranked Missouri Baptist University. For his outstanding play last week, Gossett has been chosen as the Lyon College Featured Athlete of the Week for the period of April 1-7. This is a weekly honor presented to an outstanding Lyon athlete throughout the year and is based on leadership, as well as statistical production.
Gossett’s batting average has been on the rise a much faster pace the past two weeks. In his last eight games he has hit .500 (12-of-24), including .455 this past weekend in the biggest series of the season for the Scots.
The 5-10, 210-pound player from Henderson, Texas, went 5-of-11 from the dish against Missouri Baptist, driving in four runs, while tagging a double as Lyon won three straight, after losing the series opener. The Scots took over first place in the American Midwest Conference standings after the weekend, with only eight conference games remaining. Lyon is now 33-8 on the year, and a league-best 18-2 in league play.
His biggest contest in the series came in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader when he finished 2-for-3 (.667), with a double.
Gossett is now tied for the top batting average on the Scots’ ballclub, hitting .402 (4th in the AMC). His average is tied for 50th among NAIA hitters across the nation. He’s also connected with four doubles a home run. Gossett has also driven in 21 runs and has an on-base percentage of .482. He has drawn 12 walks and has a slugging percentage of. 478.
