Lyon Baseball Sweeps Spring Hill Twinbill

MOBILE, Ala. – After a single by Blake Rogers, Lyon College pinch-hitter Colt Harmon stepped to the plate with one out in the top of the eighth inning Monday evening and sliced a single to second base, driving in pinch runner Tyler Goad for the game-clinching run, 3-2, in Game 2 of the Scots’ doubleheader with Spring Hill College at historic Stan Galle Field. Lyon captured Game 1 of the twinbill, 5-2, giving the team its fifth sweep of the young season.

The Scots improved to 13-3 on the season with the victory, having claimed victories in 12 of their last 13 games. Lyon will now remain in Mobile for two days and battle the University of Mobile on Wednesday in a doubleheader, beginning at 12-noon.

Spring Hill dropped to 7-11 on the season.

Lyon College 5, Spring Hill College 2

The Scots posted three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning in Game 1 to break open a 2-1 contest and create a four-run gap as Lyon College claimed a 5-2 win in the opener.

Second baseman Roger Glaude and Harmon, who was pinch hitting, singled to get the final frame started, as the second hit scored Glaude after he had stolen second. Centerfielder Kris Kohlstedt received a walk and both players moved up on a wild pitch. One out later first baseman Bryan Lynn connected with a two-RBI single through a hole near the shortstop and pushed two more runs in, giving Lyon enough breathing room to pick up the win.

Talan Roepcke improved his season record to 4-0 as he threw six strong innings on the hill for the Scots. In 96 pitches, he allowed just one earned run (1 total) on only three hits, with five walks and a strikeout.

Roepcke gave way to Blake Rogers, who worked the seventh frame. Rogers did allow a run on one hit, giving up a walk. But his effort was good enough to help Lyon to pick up the victory.

Wesley Roberson put Lyon on top 2-0 in the top of the first when he slammed a two-run shot over the right-field fence, pushing Kohlstedt across the plate. Roberson finished the game 1-for-4 and Roberson was 1-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs scored from his lead-off position.

Colby Rogers had a 2-for-4 outing at the dish, while Glaude was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk, Harmon was a perfect 1-for-1, with a run scored an RBI and Lynn singled and drove in a pair of runs.

Paul Sullivan (1-1) took the setback for the Badgers. In 4.1 innings he gave up two runs on a pair of hits, with three strikeouts and two walks. Keller Douglas finished the last 2.2 for Spring Hill, allowing three runs on five hits, while fanning three and walking only one.

Lyon College 3, Spring Hill College 2 (8 inn.)

When Lyon College head coach Tony Roepke made some adjustments to his lineup in the eighth inning in Game 2, the Scots came through with the game on the line, scoring a run on two hits to earn the extra-inning 3-2 victory over the Badgers.

Rogers singled to begin the eighth and Goad came in the contest to pinch-run. Goad then advanced to second on a passed ball and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Will Lindsey. Glaude was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and third and Harmon, who was pinch hitting for Durant, drove in the decisive run.

Colten McSpadden came out of the Lyon College bullpen in the bottom of the frame, allowing just two hits, but not letting a runner cross the plate. He was credited with the save.

Brandon Haller started the game on the mound for Lyon, but was unable to record the decision. In 6.2 innings he gave up two earned runs on nine hits, with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Kyle Matthews (1-0) picked up his first win on the hill, pitching 0.1 innings of hitless baseball in relief.

Johnathan Billings (1-2) took the loss for Spring Hill. Coming out of the bullpen in relief, He pitched 3.0 innings, while allowing one unearned run on a pair of hits, with a strikeout and a walk.

The Scots won the game despite not recording any extra-base hits and being outhit by the Badgers, 11-6. But five errors hurt the SHC cause, while Lyon posted just one.

Blake Rogers had a pair of singles, while Mark Armenteros added a single, in addition to Lynn, Rogers and Harmon.
