MAUMELLE, Ark. – Facing a tough field and frigid temperatures, the Lyon College men’s golf team posted a ninth-place finish both days despite improving by five strokes and shooting a two-day total of 675 at the Central Baptist College Mustang Invitational on Tuesday at The Country Club of Arkansas.
Lyon posted a 340 on the opening day and improved that to 335, finishing three strokes behind eighth place Kansas Wesleyan University (672) and five strokes behind seventh place Mid-America Christian College (670).
Seminole State Community College topped the men’s field, shooting a two-day 623, which was 47 strokes over par. Central Baptist finished 13 strokes behind the winners, posting a 636 to place second, while Christian Brothers University improved from fourth to third place on the final day, shooting a two-day 651.
University of Arkansas at Monticello placed fifth with a 654 and Martin Methodist College shot a 662 for sixth.
Central Christian College placed four strokes behind Lyon with a 679, John Brown University shot a 682 and Northwestern Oklahoma State scored a 683.
Lyon College freshman Kyle Raberding paced the Scots, posting scores of 80 and 81 for a 161, finishing 13 strokes behind individual tournament champion Justin Burns of Central Baptist (148). Tyler Carlson of Seminole State C.C. placed second with a 150 and Treg Fawl of Central Christian and Ryan Stults of Seminole State tied for third with identical 153 scores. Marshall Golowenski of Southwestern Christian and Sebastian Otoya of Seminole State tied for fifth by shooting a 155.
Scot junior Justin Long shot an 80 on the opening day, but dropped five strokes off his game on Tuesday to post a two-day total of 165 and finish in a tie for the 20th spot.
Lyon freshman Connor Pond shot an 85 in the first round and improved that by two strokes to an 83 on Tuesday to shoot a 168 and tie for 33rd place. Scot sophomore Nathan Whitlow trimmed 11 shots off his game in the final round to post an 183 and grab the 64th place and sophomore Peter Mamula of Batesville posted a 193 to place 69th.
Lyon College will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2, competing in the William Woods University Spring Invitational in Fulton, Mo.
