UALR Baseball Drops Series Finale to Troy, 10-5

TROY, Ala. – UALR’s (18-21, 5-13 Sun Belt) rally over the final two innings fell short as it lost to Troy (29-11, 11-7 SBC) Sunday afternoon (April 21) at Riddle-Pace field in Troy, Ala.

Junior Travis McDonald (1-2) started the game for UALR, giving up five runs (four earned) and seven hits while striking out six over 5.1 innings pitched. Ryan Sorce remains undefeated in five decisions for Troy, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work.

Junior Austin Pfeiffer led the way from the plate for UALR with a single and a solo home run in five at-bats. He scored twice and added an RBI. Senior John Clark added a three-run round-tripper in three at-bats with one run and an RBI.

Junior Bryson Thionnet added a solo shot for his team-leading seventh home run of the season.

Four different players for Troy added a pair of hits and two RBI’s, Tyler Vaughn, Danny Collins, Trae Santos and Josh McDorman. Jake Harrell added a single and double.

Both teams went scoreless through four innings before Troy plated four in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Vaughn doubled down the right field line to score a pair of runs. A passed ball and an RBI single by Logan Pierce put the home team up 4-0.

UALR got a run back in the top of the sixth when Pfeiffer led off the frame with a homerun to left field, but Troy scored one run in the bottom of the inning and five more in the seventh as Troy opened up a 10-1 lead.

UALR plated four runs on a pair of home runs in the final two innings to cut into the deficit. With one out in the eighth, Pfeiffer singled and stole second. Senior Blake Johnson walked and Clark homered to right field to pull the Trojans within 10-4. In the bottom of the ninth, Thionnet battled back from an 0-2 hole to run the count full. He hit the 3-2 offering over the right field wall for the final score of the game.

The Trojans return to action Wednesday (April 24) when it travels to Arlington, Texas to take on Texas-Arlington. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
