Birmingham, Ala.- In baseball action on Sunday, The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was able to convert 11 hits into nine runs but that wasn’t enough as the Samford Bulldogs sweep the weekend series with a 17-9 final.
The Golden Lions scored first on an Isias Alcantar single that brought Patrick Phillips home, who reached on a walk. Samford would answer back with five runs of their own, to go into the second inning with a 5-1 lead.
UAPB answered back in the second inning scoring four runs on two hits to tie the ball game at five. Samford went on to post runs in the second, third and fourth innings for an 8-5 lead going into the fifth. The Golden Lions crossed the plate two more times in the fifth inning to make the score read 8-7.
After the Golden Lions posted two more runs to tie the ballgame at nine in the sixth inning, Samford then registered six runs , on four hits and one error to take a 15-9 lead. The Golden Lions were unable to produce any more runs, as the Bulldogs drove in two more runs in the seventh inning for today’s final of 17-9.
Alcantar was the man at the plate for Golden Lions going 3-for-5, with two runs scored and on RBI. Mike Wieland went 2-for-5 driving in 4 runs for the Golden Lions. Andrew Buehler suffered the loss for UAPB.
The Golden Lions currently tied for second in the SWAC western division, return home on April 23rd for a midweek match-up against the Braves of Alcorn State University. The first pitch is set for 3 PM.
