Eagles Top Warriors in Non-Conference Finale

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – The Hendrix College baseball team lost their final non-conference game of the year to the University of the Ozarks 7-2 at Lonnie Qualls Field on Tuesday afternoon. The host Eagles (16-21) outhit the Warriors (17-19) 7-4 on the on day.

Eagle first baseman John Single hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first for an early 4-0 lead. In the third, Singler knocked in right fielder Freddy Prince from third on a ground out to go up 5-0.

Hendrix scored in the fourth when sophomore right fielder Matt Simmons single and scored on a base hit from sophomore designated hitter John Pounds. Junior center fielder Collin Radack started the inning with a one-out base hit and moved to second on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at home trying to score from second on Simmons’ hit.

Ozarks scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Peyton Johingan led off with a single, stole second and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Radack led the sixth off with a base hit and steal, then scored on an error on a ground ball by freshman shortstop Brandon Smith.

The Eagles plated one more in the seventh when shortstop Mitchell Powers doubled and scored on a base knock from Nick Brill.

Radack had two hits and a steal for the Warriors. Johnigan had three hits for the Eagles.

Grady Finley (2-0) earned the win, going six innings and giving up four hits, one earned run, three walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Mickey Platz (1-2) allowed three hits, six runs and three walks in three plus innings.

Hendrix will play their final Southern Athletic Association series of the year this weekend at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga. The first game will be on Friday.
