Lady Lions Basketball Team Closes Out With Victory

Pine Bluff, AR- Just one year removed from a 1-29 season, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lion’s basketball team, under the guidance of first year head coach Nate Kilbert, hosted the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University to close out their home schedule for their 10th win of the season, 70-64.

JSU got on the scoreboard first on a lay-up by Ayanna Hardy-Fuller 30 seconds into the ballgame; but UAPB would answer right back when Lakendra Marsh drained a three pointer to give the Lady Lions their first lead of the ball game, 3-2 with 19:07 on the clock. Both teams traded baskets for the next five minutes, at which point Marsh knocked down a free throw to give the Lady Lions a one point lead. That lead would run up to as much as seven, 26-19, on a lay-up by Jazmyne Victorian with 5:18 left before the half.

Jackson State chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 29, and took the lead on a three pointer by Beatrice Banks at the 1:12 mark. The Lady Tigers went into halftime with a three point lead, 34-31. 

After the intermission, The Lady Lions went back and forth with the Lady Tigers until the 16:50 mark, when they regained the lead, 40-38, on lay-up by Jenise Gentry. UAPB held the lead for the seven minutes; at which point Jackson State pushed ahead on lay-up by Tiffany Kellum, 49-48. Jackson State would hold the lead up to the 2:15 mark, until UAPB’s Carlisha Walker’s put back tied the game for its 10th time, 62-62. 

The Lady Lions would make eight straight free throws down the stretch to finish off the Lady Tigers for tonight’s final. Marsh, in her final game at H.O. Clemmons Arena, led all scorers with 22 points. She went 3-of-4 form the behind the arc, while connecting on 11-out of-14 free throws. Christina Lasasne had 10 points for her team’s efforts, while Carlisha Walker had seven points, seven rebounds, and came away with five steals.

Despite the loss, Jackson State had four players to score in double figures. Demara Howard had 14 points, Banks and Kellum turned in 13; while Hardy- Fuller had 11.

The Lady Lions will close out the 2013 SWAC regular season Thursday, February 28, in Itta Bena, MS against the Delta Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
