Red Wolves Men’s Golf Begins Play at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate

MOBILE, Ala. (2/18/13) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team shot an opening-round 308 Monday on the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course to complete the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate’s first day of competition tied for 13th place among 16 teams.

Second-round play was suspended today due to darkness and will resume at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The third and final round will immediately follow the second to complete the tournament. 

The Red Wolves were led by two players finishing the first round among the top-25 individual leaders, including Sean Brock in a tie for 11th place and Seth Garner in a tie for 24th. Brock carded a 73, which is only one stroke behind ninth place Michael Hebert of Auburn and Sam Forgan of Louisiana Tech. Illinois’ Brian Campbell posted a 68 to lead all players.

Garner recorded a 75 and is only one stroke behind eight players tied for 16th place. 

A-State’s 308 places them tied with Akron and ahead of two Sun Belt Conference teams, including Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Lafayette. The Red Wolves are just two strokes behind 12th-place Akron and within five strokes of sixth-place Wake Forest and Illinois State. Auburn shot a 3-under 285 to lead all teams. 

Also competing for ASU, Wessel Zwiegers and Christian Helmbold both shot an 80 to finish the day tied for 68th place. Matt Howton is tied for 74th place with a 78, while Chance Holden is competing in the USA Individual Tournament and stands 18th after posting a 78.
