Walnut Ridge, Ark. – The fans at the Southerland-Mabee Center witnessed bonus basketball in a battle between the Lady Eagles of Williams Baptist College and the Hannibal-LaGrange University Lady Trojans Thursday. HLG won the overtime matchup 62-60.
Williams controlled most of the first half, heading into the break with a 31-24 advantage. The Lady Trojans would storm back in the second half and take a one point lead with under a minute remaining. However, Chasity Hamilton hit two free throws to put Williams up by a point with 12 seconds remaining.
A foul at the other end sent Hannibal’s Trenee Thornton to the line for two free throws. After making the first one to tie the game at 53, she missed the second and the game headed to overtime.
The Lady Trojans outscored WBC nine to seven in overtime to capture the American Midwest Conference victory.
Cheyenne Childers led Williams with 16 points. She was 5-of-11 from the field on the night and garnered four rebounds. She was the only WBC player in double figures. Michaela Thompson scooped up 10 rebounds in the contest to lead that category.
The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the AMC. They will travel to St. Louis, Mo., on Saturday, January 19 to face AMC foe Missouri Baptist University. Their next home contest is the following Saturday, January 26, taking on Harris-Stowe State University at 2 p.m.
