Grambling, LA- In their quest to go 17-1 in SWAC regular season play, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions took to the court against the Tigers of Grambling State at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
From the opening tip, this was a physical contest that saw the score tied three times and the lead change hands five times in the first half. UAPB would push their lead to as much as 11 points late in the first half, but the Tigers would whittle away at the Golden Lions lead to go into halftime only down by five.
The second half was a continuation of the first half, as the Golden Lions took a seven point lead at the 17:18 mark, 41-34. Grambling would tie the ballgame twice in the second half and hold a small four point lead at the 10:10 mark; at which point UAPB 10-0 run to take six point lead with 7:45 left in regulation.
After knotting the ballgame up at 55-55, GSU couldn’t hold off UAPB down the stretch, as the Golden Lions would push their lead to 14, before settling on the 12 point margin of victory 79-67. Tevin Hammond would score 13 of his game high 20 points down the stretch to help UAPB extend its lead.
Hammond was 11-for-11 from the free throw line for the Golden Lions tonight. UAPB’s low post tandem of Daniel Broughton and Davon Haynes chipped in 13 points apiece; while Terrell Kennedy put up 12 points to help his team’s efforts.
Brandon Dorsett and Terry Rose scored 13 points apiece for the Tigers, while Peter Roberson had 12.
Next on tap for the Golden Lions is a Monday night road contest against the Tigers of Jackson State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
